Bon Appetit, Mes Enfants!!
Learning languages could and should be fun. It certainly is at Edgeborough School in Frensham, where every year a French Café is set up in the Food Tech department to encourage the pupils to use their language in a practical environment. Organised by the French staff, the older pupils become waiters and waitresses for the day, looking after and encouraging their younger colleagues who are the customers. Treated to a fare of criossants, tartes aux pommes and chocolat chaud, the children enjoy the whole culinary experience, while improving their French skills, along with Maths as they have to deal in Euros!
As one would expect, this goes down very well with the children, who have a wonderful time, whatever their role, as the picture indicates. ‘We have found that this combination of older pupils working with younger is highly successful’, said the Headmaster, Richard Jackson. ‘It is an event to which they all look forward very much, and their confidence in using a modern foreign language increases accordingly, a vital skill in the age in which we live.’
