A Classical journey at Edgeborough School
Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ is a wonderful epic and perfect material for Diane Redmond’s lively adaptation for children. This was borne out by the nine and ten year old boys and girls at Edgeborough, who thoroughly enjoyed their fabulous journey through that most well-known of Greek myths.
Odysseus, played with great confidence and poise by Nathan Thorpe, led his trusty band of doughty followers through all manner of trials and tribulations, watched over by the Gods on Mount Olympus. These trials included meeting terrifying one-eyed giant, Cyclops (Alexander Metcalf) and the beautiful but deadly witch, Circe (Isabella Arnott). Sammy Desai was very amusing as Odysseus’ friend, the ever faithful Eurylochus, whose principal motivation appeared to be his next meal! Holding the story line were the six narrators, who all delivered their lines in beautifully synchronised duets.
Co-ordinating and encouraging a talented cast of over forty children was the producer, Caroline Elworthy, Head of Drama at the school. She is to be commended for a performance of great professionalism and huge enjoyment. As always on occasions like these, a massive amount of team work was evident in the superb quality of the set, the stunning costumes, and the unsung heroes behind the stage.
As the Headmaster, Richard Jackson, said “This was a real triumph for Caroline and her team and I congratulate all those involved; the talents of these children never cease to amaze me!”
