Olympic Star at Edgeborough - July 2006

Last Friday Edgeborough School, in Frensham welcomed a very special guest for their annual Speech Day. Roger Black, MBE, the greatest 400 metre runner in the history of British athletics, and winner of countless medals at Olympic, World and European level, was the guest speaker at the school’s Prize Giving ceremony. Roger is now better known by many as a TV personality, especially since the success of ‘Celebrity Come Dancing’, but his words were very down to earth. Using his own experience in the Olympic Games of 1996, when he finished a fantastic second to the legendary Michael Johnson, Roger stressed the importance of setting your own goals and being happy with your own achievements. He addressed his thoughts particularly to those boys and girls who, at the age of 13, were now moving on to their next schools. ‘It was an inspirational speech,’ said the Headmaster, Richard Jackson, ‘particularly with the success of last year’s Olympic bid. Those young people have much to which to aspire and an excellent role model, and we wish them every success in their future lives.’
