Treasure Island at Edgeborough - November 2006

Not quite a cast of thousands, but the company was a good sixty strong for this excellent performance of Lynn Brittany’s adaptation of ‘Treasure Island’ by the Lower Prep of Edgeborough School.  The school has something of as reputation for drama, and it was easy to see why.  The strength of the cast was evident from the principals to the chorus, and everyone clearly enjoyed themselves immensely.

Ben Peers (9) as Long John Silver, the loveable old rogue, was outstanding in a rendition of which the great Robert Newton would have been proud.  Watching Jim Hawkins, played faultlessly by Annabelle Greatorex (9), it was hard to believe that such a mature performance was given to us by a girl barely nine years old.  Molly Biddell (10) showed in her portrayal of the good Captain Smollett that she has plenty of leadership qualities of her own!  Other notable performances were given by Sam Thomas (9) the murderous ‘Billy Bones’, Alex Rutherford, snooty ‘Squire Trelawney’, Holly Twist (10) the ghostly looking Doctor Livesey, Casper Frost (9) the lunatic ‘Ben Gunn’ and Emily Curtis (9) as the wickedly comical ‘Israel Hands’.

Congratulations must go to the Director and Head of Drama, Caroline Elworthy for whom this was another real triumph, and to all the hard-working members of her production team for the delightful music and the fabulous costumes and set. The Headmaster, Richard Jackson was quick to point out the strength of the team effort.  ‘A production of this size takes a massive amount of commitment and organisation; everyone involved deserves great praise, especially the cast themselves!’
