Appointment of new Headmaster

Daniel CoxAppointment of new Headmaster

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Daniel Cox as the new Headmaster of Edgeborough School, taking over from Dan Thornburn.  He will join the School in early 2022.

Mr Cox joins Edgeborough from Lambrook in Berkshire, the leading day and boarding prep school, where he is the Deputy Headmaster and a member of the Executive Leadership Team.  As Deputy Head, he has oversight of the day-to-day running and operational management of the 600-strong school and, as the ‘Future Schools’ Lead responsible for helping pupils identify their new senior school, he has a detailed understanding of many senior schools in this area and beyond.

Mr Daniel Cox

Prior to joining Lambrook, Mr Cox spent 11 years at Churcher’s College in Hampshire, a school for pupils aged 3-18, most recently as Senior Teacher and a member of the Senior Management Team. Whilst there, he completed an MSc in Education and Management.

Mr Cox’s early teaching career had a strong sports focus, and he was both Head of Rugby and Director of Sport at Churcher’s College.  He has played representative rugby at a regional level and is a keen sailor, cricketer and golfer.  Unsurprisingly therefore, he is a strong proponent of a rich and varied co-curriculum that provides children with the broadest range of opportunities.

He also has a firm belief that, to be truly successful, an independent school needs to be outward-looking, and he has been responsible for developing Lambrook’s very effective outreach and partnership programme.

He therefore brings wide and varied experience from two vibrant and successful co-ed schools, and is a passionate and energetic advocate for a modern prep education.

Jeremy McIlroy, Chair of Governors commented:

In a strong field, Daniel’s track record and ambition for Edgeborough made him the stand-out candidate.   We all very much look forward to extending a warm welcome to him, his wife Lucy and their daughters Iris and Elsie, both of whom will be joining the School. They join us at a very exciting time for Edgeborough, with the School seeing record pupil numbers and with new developments in several areas including, of course, our recently announced partnership with Charterhouse.”

Daniel Cox said:

I have watched the outstanding job that Dan Thornburn has done to put Edgeborough where it is today.  It is a highly successful school with kindness and happiness at its heart, and the new partnership with one of the country’s great senior schools clearly brings even more to the story.  I am delighted and hugely excited to have been offered this role.  Our whole family is greatly looking forward to moving to Edgeborough and to engaging fully in the school community.

Mr Cox will be working closely with Mr Thornburn, and our senior leadership team, in the coming months to ensure a seamless handover.
