Year 7&8 DT workshop led by professional Industrial Designer

On Friday we were so pleased to welcome Jon Hewitt, a professional Industrial Designer. Jon spoke to Years 7 and 8 about his educational journey and some of the products he has worked on during his career in the commercial world and whilst working as a consultant. He led Year 8 through a ‘design and make’ workshop, where pupils had to develop a product to hold a mobile phone – to be used whilst cooking, during free time or to compliment study time.

Jon spoke passionately about every idea being counted and encouraged the children to give feedback to each other when they presented their sketch models at the end of the day. Pupils commented how amazing the day had been and how they enjoyed the studio/workshop vibe which was stress free, giving the teams the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Jon commented, ‘If I am able to inspire just one of the children to consider a career in the design industry by the end of the day, I will be really happy.’

We look forward to welcoming him back next academic year.
