Nursery and Pre-School children experience a caring and stimulating environment whilst being an integral part of the school, sharing specialist French and P.E. teachers and the beautiful school grounds, although situated in their own exclusive house and gardens.
Private Nursery & Pre – School in Surrey
Nursery and Pre-School children experience a caring and stimulating environment under the guidance of passionate and knowledgeable staff. The children benefit from an early years’ experience which celebrates nature and outdoor learning, whilst giving focus to individual development and fostering that vital love to learn and to wonder.
Edgeborough’s Nursery & Pre-School years center the child at the heart of the provision and experienced offered. All children are treated as young individuals with ideas, feelings and huge potential. The play-based curriculum promotes all-round development, balance and opportunity, with practitioners playing alongside the children to support them in developing good relationships, self-confidence, independence, and resilience. In the happy, community environment offered to the children, each learner develops the confidence to take risks, to ask questions and to try out their ideas.
Through the environment offered, we provide a wide range of opportunities to enable your child to flourish and thrive. The department is well equipped with a large woodland play area, a hall for music, dance and drama and spacious classrooms. We frequently explore the playing fields and beautiful school grounds with the great outdoors placed at the heart of much we do.
Children are welcome to join the Nursery from their second birthday, they then progress to our Pre-School the academic year before they start Reception (the September after their fourth birthday).
Based in Farnham in Surrey, the Nursery & Pre-School provides a secure and relaxed environment for children to begin their school life.

A Typical Day in Nursery
Whilst each and every day is a new, exciting adventure sparked by interests, wonders, seasonal changes or new discoveries, some aspects of the day remain consistent to help offer stability and security.
Each day will offer a morning circle-time, where we can say hello, share news, talk about the day and sing songs. Similarly, sessions typically close with a group story or song, as we say goodbye to our friends and transition with knowingness to the next part of the day (i.e. lunch or Acorns). Other regular intervals include our mealtimes, snacks, scheduled naps (where applicable) and activity slots. Again, by keeping some routine to the day, we offer a level of structure and rhythm which encourages positive patterns of behaviour.
All meals and snacks are home-cooked, healthy and varied. We encourage the children to eat well, to try new foods, to acquire healthy eating habits and to enjoy mealtimes with friends.
The environment lends itself to child-led exploration with the children able to pursue and enhance their own interests. In what is referred to as a ‘Free Flow’ set-up, the young pupils will move between and across indoor and outdoor areas of the learning space, working with different friends or teachers and making choices in their learning and play. Owning what they do and feeling proud. The provision and monitoring of the pupils is carefully mapped against the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and centred on individual targets and next-steps in development.
Throughout the week, different activities and opportunities supplement the provision and provide specialist exposure to potential passions and talents. Such may include lessons in Music or French, tennis lessons, a variety of dance clubs and our ever-popular Bike Club.
Specifically, a highlight of everyone’s week is their afternoon in the woods for our bespoke OWL (Outdoor Woodland Learning) programme. The children relish their time spent making dens, campfires or woodland crafts and develop in the process an appreciation of nature, a sense of risk and an ability to work collectively as a part of a team.
Throughout the school year, special days, visits and trips will then be linked to the learning topic or the seasons, with popular events including; Princesses and Pirates Day, Pajama Day, The Nursery Christmas Party, Alice Holt Autumn Walk and Animal Day with the Ranger.

Nursery and Pre-School facilities
The Nursery and Pre-School have an extensive range of large and small resources covering all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). These resources are open-ended, rich in learning potential, inviting and safe. They capture the curiosity of the child and allow for individualised learning preferences and interests. Options available to the children are changed frequently in response to the children’s learning, interests and requests alongside seasonal changes.
The Nursery benefits from a large and inviting open plan room which opens out into a rustic woodland outdoor play area, serving as a continuation of the learning space. Similarly, the Pre-School environment facilitates a free-flow learning experience, with a large indoor area providing allocated areas for different aspects of learning.
The school’s wider facilities are used on a regular basis, with PE taking place on the fields or in the Sports Hall, and OWL (Outdoor Woodland Learning) in our very popular and exciting woodland classroom.
Here’s what the Nursery children say about life at Edgeborough…
I Iike spotting trees from the mini bus on the way to our trips.
I love gymnastics because I like doing handstands.
I like coming down the fireman’s pole!
Football club is really good fun with the Sports teacher.
When I go to the reception class on Thursdays I like seeing my brother and playing with the waffle blocks.
I like going to see the pond at Alice Holt with my school friends.
I love singing the French songs.
We promote communication between parents and staff so that minor concerns can be addressed as soon as they arise. Parents are welcome to talk to staff at the end of a session and can also email information to staff. Although the staff work as a team and all are familiar with your child they are assigned a key worker to compete their individual Learning Journey. Each term we have Progress Review Meetings where parents have the opportunity to spend time with their child’s key worker and class teacher to view their Learning Journey and discuss their progress. Parents of Nursery 1 children receive a written Two Year Check and each child has a written Summary every term. At the start of the academic year we have a social event for all parents to meet each other and staff. Throughout Nursery we look forward to building strong relationships between the staff and parents.
The Parent Partnership
We promote and value partnership between parents and staff to help prioritise the well-being, development and happiness of the child. We uphold an open-door policy with frequent updates provided on the school gate, on Tapestry or by email. In all cases, from sleep times to settling-in at Nursery, we seek guidance from parents and work carefully with you to respond to the child, meet their needs and provide them with continuation and stability.
Although our staff work as a team and all are familiar with each and every child, you will be assigned a Key Person who will give particular oversight to your child’s care and ensure that their needs are met. Each term you will be invited in for a Progress Review meeting with your child’s Key Person to discuss their development, socialisation and progress at Edgeborough.
As a parent, you will receive regular entries in your child’s electronic Learning Journey (Tapestry – hyperlink here?) showcasing their many successes, adventures and ‘wow moments’. Through sharing visual memories of the school day, not only will you get a better understanding of your child’s experience and progress, but you will be able to sit with them at home and reflect on their week at school as you view Tapestry together.
Twice a year, you will also receive a written report or a ‘Two Year Developmental Check’ (in the Autumn and Summer terms).
Our year is permeated by events and occasions which parents are invited to attend. These range from our annual Christmas Concert to our Harvest Service, our Early Years Extravaganza, Family OWL and Secret Reader events.
